There are approximately 40 distribution nodes in the domestic primary freight network and over 1500 nodes in the domestic secondary freight network.
Earlier, their processes were very manual. Many crucial daily load and route decisions, instructions to carriers and communication/information transfer between nodes were made by each dispatch team at a back of factory (BOF) or distribution center. Decision control points and processes for the daily management of freight were inconsistent across the network and there were almost no qualified business rules that were consistently applied to maintain transport efficiencies. The Logistics Operations team in India, therefore, required a centrally coordinated, scalable system that would enable qualified daily decision making to optimize routes and load capacity in order to maintain and control freight costs; essentially allow them to manage their end to end logistic operations. Over a period of time, the team at Elixia realized the humungous issues being faced by them in managing their supply chain due to their scale of operations. Over a period of time, this solution has evolved so much that as of now, practically their entire logistics operations is dependent on Control Tower. The system comes into picture right from production up until delivery covering primary as well as secondary logistics. The system stores the complete master database of all their transporters pan India, their service details, associated costs and much more. The system also stores details of all SKUs, warehouses, DCs and so on. Production indents are created using the system. Once the products are ready for delivery, the production unit books a transporter’s vehicle for delivery. Mind you, this is not just a random booking but an automated intelligent algorithm that picks and prefers transporters based on the intelligence provided and algorithms designed in such a way that efficiency is maximized and costs are minimized. All the transporters are also given limited access to their system and their separate logins via web as well as the mobile app to accept these bookings and allot the specified vehicles in a time-bound manner.
Once these vehicles reach the said pick up location, immediately the in time is punched inaccurately through an app-based/OTP based mechanism and a similar thing happens when the vehicles are ready to leave after loading. This ensures accurate capture of in time, out time, loading time and allows managers to keep track of vehicles to reduce idle times. This mechanism in itself has led to huge cost savings in terms of detention costs. Once a vehicle finishes this process and is out for a trip, the entire trip is closely monitored for details like time taken, distance covered, idle time, expenses incurred and so on to ensure an air-tight process and timely delivery. Again at point of delivery, acknowledgment is taken from the warehouse/DC in-charge and uploaded on the system to ensure accurate delivery status and product status. Once this entire cycle is over, the invoices are auto-generated through the pre-defined constraints in the system and are sent for approval thereby making the process that much quicker, payments that much faster, reducing manual workload drastically and eliminating any scope for manual errors/manipulations.
